George Coleman began his teaching career not too long before he became Peter Boneparth’s soccer and baseball coach! As a recent college graduate, he joined the faculty of Woodmere Academy, a preparatory school on Long Island that later merged with Lawrence Country Day School. He became not only coach but mentor, role model, and cheerleader to many young men who sat in his classroom, whether it was history or hitting he taught them. He went on to become Dean of the Middle School, then Dean of Admissions and Assistant Headmaster. Through his 14-year career at the school, Coach Coleman led by example.

George found the young Peter Boneparth to be a student of not only the sports he played but of life in general. A most accomplished participant in academics as well as athletics, it was Peter’s thoughtful, measured application of skill and strategy that George remembers being the key to Peter’s success and leadership.

George’s passion for youth development led him to found the summer day camp at Woodmere Academy, and shortly thereafter he began his own camp, Coleman Country Day Camp, in Merrick, Long Island, which this summer marks its 25th anniversary. The Coleman Family also owns an overnight camp, Camp Echo, in the Catskill Mountains of New York, as well as a travel and family camp, all under the umbrella of Coleman Family Camps. Over the years, George has been an advocate for children in the field of camp. Currently, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Camp Association and also serves on the Governor’s New York Department of Health Camp Safety Advisory Council.

In his 30-year-plus career in education, George Coleman recently came “home” to lend his expertise on the other side of the table—he now serves on the Board of Lawrence Woodmere Academy. He and Peter are colleagues who share a rich history of teamwork--supporting children to “dream big” both philosophically and literally. They both have scrapbooks to prove it!
